What’s an Anchor Link and How Do I Use It?

The most common use of an anchor link is the “back to top” links that are found at the bottom of many websites. Another common use for anchors is on FAQ pages where all the questions are links at the top of the page that take the user further down the page to the answer. Answer #1   Back to Questions
An anchor link may also be referred to as an “anchor tag” or simply an “anchor”. There are others as well but they’re less common. The most common term among web designers is “anchor tag”. For people that are not web design professionals it’s probably “anchor link” (because they heard it or read it somewhere), then things like “page jump”, “hop link”, “same page link”, etc.

Answer #2   Back to Questions
Yes. By making an image link to something you are essentially turning the image into a button. To turn an image or icon into an anchor link in Website Tonight simply follow the instructions (below) for creating an anchor link, but instead of typing and selecting text for the link (step #9) you will insert and select an image.

Answer #3   Back to Questions
Anchor tags let you jump to a specific location on the same page (like in this example) or to a specific location on another webpage. To jump to a specific location on another webpage you will need to add the destination part of the anchor link to the destination page (instructions below).

By making information easy to find, your site visitors are less likely to get frustrated and leave your website to find what they are looking for on another website. Anchor links are especially helpful for Website Tonight users that are trying to fit lots of information on a single page (often to avoid needing to upgrade their Website Tonight account). With a little ingenuity anchor links can be extremely useful.
