What is Disk Space?

To make it simple think of disk space as how much internet space you have reserved for your website. Every time you upload media (video, image, audio, PDF, Word doc, etc), create a page, or add anything to a page, you are taking up more of your reserved space. Some types of files fill more disk space than others. For example, a video file or an image file will use more of your disk space than adding a few lines of text to a page.

Exceeding your disk space results in overage charges. Check your available space regularly, and always check before you upload large files. Every upload and change counts toward your overall available disk space, even if you do not publish the change.

  • KB stands for Kilobit
  • MB stands for Megabit
  • GB stands for Gigabit
  • 1,000 KB = 1 MB
  • 1,000 MB = 1 GB

How much disk space will my file use?

  1. Search your computer for the file you want to upload.
  2. When you find it right-click on it.
  3. Select Properties from the pop-up window.

This will show you the details of the file. You should see something like Size, or File Size, or Size on Disk (verbiage varies from computer to computer). That size is how much disk space that file will use when you upload it to your Website Tonight account.

What is Bandwidth?

To make it simple think of bandwidth as how much energy your website has each month. Every time someone visits your site (loads a page, downloads a file, watches a video, etc) your Website Tonight account uses bandwidth (energy) to display your website. The more traffic your website gets the more bandwidth you will use, but the number of visitors to your site is not the only thing that matters. Some types of actions use more bandwidth than others. For example, loading images uses more bandwidth than loading text, so if your website has lots of images or large images then you can go through a lot of bandwidth with just a few site visitors.

Exceeding your bandwidth limits (“bursting your bandwidth”) results in overage charges. Check your available bandwidth regularly.

  • Deluxe Website Tonight Plan: 500 GB
  • Premium Website Tonight Plan: 1,000 GB

This is actually a very large amount of bandwidth. 99% of Website Tonight users never even come close to using all their monthly bandwidth.

  • KB stands for Kilobit
  • MB stands for Megabit
  • GB stands for Gigabit
  • 1,000 KB = 1 MB
  • 1,000 MB = 1 GB

How can I calculate how much bandwidth a file will use?

Predicting bandwidth usage is a hard thing to do because it depends on both the size of the files and how many times they are used. Since you don’t know how many people will visit your website and use a file you can’t predict bandwidth usage with 100% accuracy. Most people simply check their bandwidth usage for several days after any major change to make sure they don’t go over their accounts bandwidth limit. This is the formula for calculating bandwidth usage…

Formula: File Size X Number of File Loads per Month = Bandwidth

Example: 10MB X 5 Loads = 50MB of Bandwidth Used

So, if you have a 10MB image on your webpage and the page is loaded 5 times then that image alone will use up 50MB of bandwidth.
