How to Save Your Website Tonight Project

Have you ever been working on the computer for a really long time when suddenly and unexpectedly the computer shuts down (computer crash, power outage, etc) loosing all of your hard work? This happens more often than you think, and it always seems to happen at the worst possible moments.

Not a problem for Website Tonight users because Website Tonight automatically saves your work every time you initiate a new action. For example, if you switch between pages, click out of a content block, add a feature, log out of Website Tonight, or do anything else that causes Website Tonight to respond, your project is automatically saved for you. You don’t even have to turn on the auto save feature, it’s always there to protect you.

However, there is one big downside to the auto save feature if you aren’t careful. Lets say you are happy with a page the way it is, but you want to see if you can make it better by changing some links, moving some text, and removing some images. So, you spend 20-30 minutes working on it and ultimately decide that you liked it better the way it was to begin with. Well, you will now have to manually undo all the changes you’ve made for the last 20-30 minutes because there is no one-click “undo” or “step-back” button.

The simple solution to this problem is to make backups of your Website Tonight project every time you reach a milestone. Good times to make a backup include each time you publish your site, every time you complete a round of revisions, anytime you feel like you have things “just right”, before or after you add a page or feature, etc. That way when you decide that you want to go back to the way it was several changes ago you can restore the backup with just a couple clicks.

If you do not make backups frequently enough then when you want to go back 10 changes your most recent backup may be from 40 or more changes ago. No fun! But don’t get too over zealous and start making backups with every other tiny change because you are limited in the number of backups you can have, and Website Tonight will delete the oldest one to make room for a new one.
