Title your Webpage for Google
Sunday, December 6, 2009 4:07When a word or phrase is searched on Google the results are displayed ten per page. Each result gets four lines. The first line is a link to that website. The second and third lines are a description of the website. The last line is the URL of the website. The words you see in the four lines of each result were not written by Google. They come from the website they are about. In this article we are going to be explaining how to modify what Google shows in line one for your website.
Note: We are using Google because they are the largest search engine. When considering search engine optimization it is usually a good idea to cater to Google. Especially considering that most other search engines (Yahoo, Bing, AOL, etc) work just about the same and for the most part they all follow Google’s lead.
You tell Google what to put in line 1 for your website by naming your web page. There are a limited number of characters that search engines will allow, so Website Tonight restricts you from putting in too many. To change what Google has for the first line of your web page you will need to change the page title. Here’s how…
- Log into Website Tonight.
- Go to the page you want to change.
- Hover over the Properties icon (top center). It looks like this:

- From the drop-down list select Page. (note below)
- The one you want to change is the Browser Title. (note below)
- Once you have made your changes click save.
- Repeat these steps for each page. (note below)
- Preview and Publish.
Note Step 4: When you click Page a window should pop-up. If it does not then turn off your pop-up blocker or tell it to allow this site.
Note Step 5: You are probably wondering what significance the Heading Title, Button Title, and File Name have. They are also important, but for now we are working with page titles so we will save that for another article.
Note Step 7: It’s important that each page has a distinctly unique title. Do not use the same title on more than one page.
