Switch Templates
Friday, January 15, 2010 17:31New template options are constantly being added to Website Tonight. You may like one of the newer templates more than the one you are currently using, or maybe you just discovered a template that you hadn’t seen before. Just because you have already started working on your Website Tonight does not mean that you will lose all of your work if you switch templates.
If your website is already published don’t worry. When you switch Website Tonight templates the changes are not automatically live. Until you publish again the only person that can see the new template is you. This gives you the ability to try out new templates to see if there are any others you like better than the one you are currently using.
How to Change Website Tonight Templates
Make a backup BEFORE changing your template. This will give you the option to restore your original website if you do not like the changes. For instructions on how to make a backup of your Website Tonight account click here.
- Login to Website Tonight
- Click the Templates tab in the upper left hand corner.
- Click on the See More Templates button above the template thumbnails on the left hand side. This should make a window popup.
- You can filter template options with the Category dropdown or select All (first option). You can also filter by navigation layout (horizontal or vertical).
- Check mark the Site option under Templates that work with.
- If you use Quick Shopping Cart also check Store.
- If you use Quick Blogcast also check Blog.
This will ensure that the template you select for your site also has a matching template you can use for your store and/or blog.
- Click the Update button. This will make the popup go away.
- Now select a template by clicking on it’s thumbnail on the left hand side. You can also change the main color option by clicking on the colored boxes next to the thumbnail.
- Click the Apply to My Site button. It looks like this:

Website Tonight will now migrate the content of your site (text, links, images, etc) to the new template, but you’re not done yet. The templates come in many different shapes and sizes so when you migrate to a new template your content might not fit the way it did before. You will want to go through your site page by page and make adjustments to make sure that your website is still visually appealing.
When you change templates the new template will automatically use the default background images. If you had changed the background images on the old template you will need to redo these changes. You will not need to upload your images again.
Once you are done making adjustments click the Preview button (upper right hand corner).

If you do not like the new template for any reason you can restore your backup and start over. If you are happy with the new template then you are ready to publish. We recommend also making a backup of this new version before publishing.
