How to Setup a Free WebSite Tonight

Domain purchases from Go Daddy or Nerd Warehouse include a free Website Tonight account. You can use this free credit to give Website Tonight a test drive. However, the free version of Website Tonight is limited to five pages and includes advertisements at the top of every page. Some of the features are limited in the free version, but it does allow you to get a feel for how the program works, whether or not the extended version will suite your needs, and it allows you to publish to the internet so you can test things live online. Obviously you can upgrade Website Tonight at any time which will unlock all the features, remove the ads, and allow you to add more pages.

Click here to upgrade Website Tonight from the free demo version (advertisement supported) to the full-featured extended version (no ads).
If you purchased your Website Tonight account from NerdWarehouse.com then skip step number 2 because it does not apply to you.

    • Select a Template Choose from over 300 templates that will give you the basic structure of a website and leave it up to you to put in all the text, images, and other features you plan to add. This is the option most people select.
    • Start from Scratch If you choose this option then Website Tonight will start you with a blank white page, not a template. You can use all the features in Website Tonight to add to your blank page, but unless you want a very plain website you should go with a different option.

Congratulations! You have successfully setup a free demo version of Website Tonight.

Completing the steps above will not make your website live on the internet. To do that you will need to add your content and publish first.
If you are using a .MOBI domain name you will only be able to add mobile page layouts. Traditional page layouts will not be an option for you.

Pre-Built Design

The term “Pre-Built Design” refers to the templates available in Website Tonight that already have text and images added to them (text + images = content). The purpose of the pre-built designs is to eliminate much of the work the user would normally put into formatting the content on their website. With a pre-built design you simply need to replace the text and images with your own. There are roughly 100 pre-built template designs that are included with Website Tonight.

Script Box

A “script box” is used to add code to Website Tonight that is more advanced than HTML. For example, if you have code for a widget or email signup form that uses JavaScript or some other type of advanced code then you will need to use the script box feature to add it to your site. Inserting advanced code into the HTML editor will not work.

How to FTP to Website Tonight

Technically speaking there is no FTP access into Website Tonight, but depending on exactly what you are trying to do there may be another way.

How to Upload Files and Images to Website Tonight

If you have files that you want people to be able to download (ex. Word documents, PDF’s, music, etc) then first you will need to upload the file(s) to Website Tonight. Website Tonight includes an easy-to-use file upload feature so that you do not need to FTP. The next step is to create a link to the file from one of your pages.

For detailed instructions read, “Creating Download Links in Website Tonight“.

How to FTP a Website Template to Website Tonight

If you have full web pages that were designed outside of Website Tonight then you cannot FTP them and use Website Tonight to manage and edit the files. That means you cannot hire a web designer to build you a custom website, or purchase a web template somewhere online, and use Website Tonight to work on that website. The only exceptions are the templates for sale here on ProSiteTonight.com. All of the custom templates Pro Site Tonight sells are built exclusively for Website Tonight.

Web Designers – How to FTP a Custom Web Design

Website Tonight is not a standard website builder like FrontPage or Dreamweaver which allow you to modify any HTML file. Website Tonight is a template based CMS (content management system). The user starts by selecting a pre-designed template from within Website Tonight then additional HTML is dynamically generated as the user adds and edits content on the template they selected. The user modifies the site using a built-in point-and-click WYSIWYG (“What You See Is What You Get”, pronounced “Whiz-E-Wig”), but the WYSIWYG only supports Website Tonight templates.

Ultimately this means FTP access to Website Tonight is blocked, and your client cannot use Website Tonight to manage the web design you built for them. They will need to cancel Website Tonight, get a refund, and purchase standard hosting instead.

Alternatively, you can build your clients website for them using Website Tonight, but you will need to start in Website Tonight because there is no FTP. Website Tonight does allow you to add custom HTML and JavaScript snippets to the content areas, the header, and before the closing body tag. You can also modify the templates default CSS using the Advanced CSS editor. These options allow you to add features (ex. widgets, contact forms, social badges, etc) from outside of Website Tonight and give you a bit of control over the design and layout of the Website Tonight template.

For more information read, “Custom Website Tonight Template Design“.

Why are there ads on my Website Tonight site?

Why are there ads at the top of the site I built with Website Tonight?

If you see a banner of advertisements at the top of your website (when you preview or publish) then you are using the demo version of Website Tonight.

How do I change which ads display on my free Website Tonight account?

You cannot control which advertisements show in the banner. The ads are selected by matching the keywords on your site with offers from advertising publishers, so it’s potential that your competition will be advertising to your customers on your website.

Can I remove or block the ads on my Website Tonight?

If you would like to remove the advertisements showing on your Website Tonight account you will need to upgrade from the free demo version to any of the (not free) full versions. Blocking the ads in any other way is a violation of the terms of service with your Website Tonight provider.

How to Save Your Website Tonight Project

Have you ever been working on the computer for a really long time when suddenly and unexpectedly the computer shuts down (computer crash, power outage, etc) loosing all of your hard work? This happens more often than you think, and it always seems to happen at the worst possible moments.

Not a problem for Website Tonight users because Website Tonight automatically saves your work every time you initiate a new action. For example, if you switch between pages, click out of a content block, add a feature, log out of Website Tonight, or do anything else that causes Website Tonight to respond, your project is automatically saved for you. You don’t even have to turn on the auto save feature, it’s always there to protect you.

However, there is one big downside to the auto save feature if you aren’t careful. Lets say you are happy with a page the way it is, but you want to see if you can make it better by changing some links, moving some text, and removing some images. So, you spend 20-30 minutes working on it and ultimately decide that you liked it better the way it was to begin with. Well, you will now have to manually undo all the changes you’ve made for the last 20-30 minutes because there is no one-click “undo” or “step-back” button.

The simple solution to this problem is to make backups of your Website Tonight project every time you reach a milestone. Good times to make a backup include each time you publish your site, every time you complete a round of revisions, anytime you feel like you have things “just right”, before or after you add a page or feature, etc. That way when you decide that you want to go back to the way it was several changes ago you can restore the backup with just a couple clicks.

If you do not make backups frequently enough then when you want to go back 10 changes your most recent backup may be from 40 or more changes ago. No fun! But don’t get too over zealous and start making backups with every other tiny change because you are limited in the number of backups you can have, and Website Tonight will delete the oldest one to make room for a new one.

Website Tonight Backups

Having a backup of your website is like wearing a seatbelt when you drive. It might not seem important now, but when things crash it suddenly becomes crucial. If your website is important to you then having a backup should be equally as important. Luckily a backup feature is built into Website Tonight.

  1. Login to Website Tonight.
  2. Make sure the Site tab is selected in the upper left hand corner.
  3. Hover over Manage in the upper left hand corner.
  4. Select Backup/Restore from the dropdown menu.
  5. Create a name for your backup.
  6. Click the Save Web Site button.

Usually backups will only take a couple of minutes. How long your backup takes will depend on the size of your site, how often you backup (fewer changes = faster backup), the speed of your internet connection, whether or not this is your first backup (first backup often takes longer), and how many other users are backing up their websites at that moment.

Now that your backup has been created you should see the name, a time stamp, and a restore option. You can restore it whenever you would like by clicking the up arrow button to the right of the backup.
